I've noticed that, during singletracking on the weekends, I tend to see three Red Line trains show up in quick succession, followed by a 20-30 minute gap with no trains. (All whilst the PIDs are virtually useless). This is very clearly a kludge bring up the numbers on some sort of performance metric.

Although this makes for good average-throughput numbers, it sucks if you get stuck waiting, and is only barely better than actual 25-minute headways. Also, the first train ends up being packed, while the third invariably ends up empty. Those trains tend to be much more crowded than the worst trains during the weekday rush hour.
