So sad how far Anacostia has been left behind. I can remember going to the Peoples with my younger sisters. It was a nice place to grow up in the 1950s and 1960s. There was discrimination but you learned to live with it. We were glad when our parents moved out in 1976 after having their home broken into a couple times over a month or two. My father was afraid they would get hurt. People were leaving and renting their houses out so you didn't know your neighbors anymore like you used to. They left and didn't look back Sadly, I hadn't been back to my old street in more than a decade. This was about five years ago. That area needs help and its been that way for a long time now.

I remember those houses when it used to be Nichols Avenue because their front yards were so big.
