@oboe - the metro is most heavily used by suburbanites from the inner "suburbs" (Arlington, Alex, close in MoCO and PG) and the middle suburbs (other parts of MoCo and PG, FFX inside the beltway, and parts of FFX not far outside the beltway) to get to DC and to parts of Arlington adjacent to DC. For the most part these are people who highly value metro, and in many instances (Alex and Arlington, my God, and increasingly in FFX and MoCo) are embracing some degree of urbanism. The anti urbanist folks include more heavily folks from Loudoun, PWC and outer parts of FFX (Im not sure whom in Maryland) Shutting down metro and the chaos that would ensue would only delight them, as they are eager for the further shift of employment to the far suburbs (esp to campuses in the outer Dulles Corridor)

Once again, your tendency to see this as DC vs suburbs, rather than urbanism vs sprawl, blinds you to real political conflicts in the suburbs, and to potential prourbanist allies.
