Adding to Boots's experiences and conclusions -which I share - the primary reason the beltway is so heavily used is because there are no good alternatives. If more trains were available-really available, more people would use them. The lack of choices forces us into cars even when that is not our preference. That is not freedom, and it is not egalitarian. I am forced into owning a car because good alternatives do not exist. That is not to say cars should disappear, don't have a place, or that I may not own one anyway -as a priviledge and a luxury, not as a necessity for much of the inter and intracity traveling I do. I would love to be able to take a tram and/or train to most of the places I now get to by car! Oh that would be just so greater greater.
