My tuppence ha'penny'orth:

- Connectivity. There has to be at least one route, maybe two, made available as parallel to Route 1 to relieve traffic. As of now the only option is Telegraph Rd., and that's not as easily accessible along its whole route as it needs to be. Not from Route 1, at least.

- Metro, ideally as far as Woodbridge, and my suggestion would be to take it through Lorton. Gunston doesn't need it...it's fine as is. I can suggest a raft of stops, too, if need be. :-) It should be underground - there's no way to take it down the median without eating up portions of two lanes, and that takes away capacity. Will that be more expensive? Yes...but I think it will be worth it in the long run.

- It needs to be far easier to cross the road than it is now. Not enough crosswalks, for one. Personally, I'm in favor of some European-style raised footbridges, but I know that's not going to go over well. Regardless, it's dangerous as hell to cross it now.

- I know there's been some hand-wringing about what to do with the old ISA/MVHS site...what about a branch campus of NVCC? There isn't one anywhere along the Route 1 corridor...and there's a significant low-income population in the vicinity that could take advantage of it.

I've lived in this area 20 years - near Mount Vernon Hospital - and it's been wonderful to see the changes wrought over the past decade or so. There's a lot of work that needs yet to be done, certainly, but I love the improvements that we've gotten thus far. Although I do wish Dak's Grill would come back...
