I agree that increasing automobility led to the decline in men's hats, but I wouldn't put all of the blame on Ike. The horse was already out of the barn when he signed the Federal Aid Highway Act in '56. Transit's peak ridership year was sometime around '46. So yes, highways (and a combination of other social trends in the 60s/70s) killed the hat, but it wasn't entirely Ike's fault.
