In my experience for "pop-ups" and additions that require zoning relief, OP typically does provide cursory input on "compatibility" of materials and massing when it comes to reports to the BZA on Special Exceptions and Variances, but it's pretty weak tea. And an area the BZA is understandably reluctant to wade into.
