Why shouldn't it be a popularity contest? Because the modernists will lose! Of course they say "in past decades people thought Georgian and Victorian architecture was ugly." What they don't tell you is that they were those people! Only architects could have come up with such monstrous things to replace a beautiful city. It was the everyman who said that the old was beautiful, even if he didn't know why.
