Until a few years ago, a ride on the Path from Harrison to Newark Penn Station was...FREE! No turnstiles, no fare gates, nothing. My understanding is that quite a few people would park at the Harrision commuter lots, then take the 90 second ride over the bridge into Newark. It was cheaper then parking in downtown Newark.

When PATH went to the magnetic stripe cards, they started charging for this ride.

By the way, the best transit deal of all is still the Staten Island Ferry which is always free. You can actually take the SIRT from Tottenville to the Ferry (about a 45 minute ride, some of through scenic wooded areas), then take the ferry, then take any subway line to any other destination in NYC, all for the cost of one subway ride. Now that is a deal.
