I honestly have no idea how you get 'bigotry' out of southern accent. The detail makes it easier to visualize the situation, which is something people typically do when writing. Of course, why a large tourist family would be at the NY Ave station in the first place I have no idea, which leads me to believe the whole thing is fabricated. But, still.
