I'm kind of surprised that no one floated the idea of putting solar PV panels on top of the resevoirs.

Its being done elsewhere - a recent 5MW installation in SF comes to mind - http://goo.gl/maps/p360 - and if (and *only* if) DC had the right financial incentives in place to make it worthwhile, then it would generally be something I'd support.

I'm not as familiar with the MacMillan resevoir as I am with the Georgetown resevoir, but the height of the resevoir relative to the surrounding properties would likely be the biggest issue of conention. The Georgetown resevoir is surrounded on 2 sides (NE and NNW) by 2+ story houses that look out over the resevoir so I really doubt that residents would put up with their view changing to something like this: http://goo.gl/maps/JCcw

I don't know how much more feasible such an installation would be at the MacMillan resevoir - I know there are a number of hospitals surrounding, but not much else.

As for the insolation here in DC - its only marginally worse than in that part of SF (which is pretty good to begin with since its out in the aptly named Sunset part of town)
