John, A gentle rebuke well said and accepted. This is about smart growth. I applaud GGW for writing about the ANCs and how they influence what goes on in our neighborhoods. For better or worse, the ANCs are seldom given the "great weight" they should, particularly in zoning matters. But they do have a lot of power to influence the dialogue and many of the commissioners of the last few years have been very successful in turning that away from the Nimbyism we all despise and replacing it with more constructive thoughts about multi-modal transportation, pedestrian access and safety, bikes, transit-oriented development, and so on. My comments on Mr. Tope vs Mr. Siegel, neither of whom I know personally, stem from knowing that to be an effective ANC commissioner, you spend a lot of time in the trenches, with all its tedium and hard work and potential to get your head blown off. That's community work! And at least I know that Mike Siegel has slogged through similar mud, albeit in the public schools.
