Circulator gets another iPhone app

Developer Yaogang Lian has created another iPhone application for the Circulator, CircDC, which aims to do more than the app from DC's OCTO released in October.

Utilizing the open data feed OCTO provides with Circulator locations, CircDC shows the locations of Circulator buses, and also makes its own estimates of how long it will take for buses to arrive. You can look up stops by which ones are closest to your location, see all stops on a line, or mark stops as Favorites.

This is the kind of innovation that's possible when agencies release data openly. OCTO isn't worried that this app might cut into sales of their app; to the contrary, they tweeted about this app lauding the initiative of the developer.

The app costs 99¢. If you download it, post your thoughts about its interface and accuracy in the comments.

Cool, but it'd great if the main Circulator site worked on regular mobile phones. Even on a Blackberry, you can't get past the intro page; if you go to another page via a direct link, you can't load the map or a list of stops.

Gavin, I can load the Circulator map on my iPhone, although it takes forever and a half to do so and about a quarter of forever to redraw when zooming in or out.

This is awesome! Better UI than DC Gov's. Any chance there will be one for all buses?

Now we just need more of this stuff developed for the Android platform. The "DC Metro Train Info" app seems to be a good one for the Droid, but haven't seen a decent bus app. Any suggestions?

I need to learn XCode and get on this train.

Anyone have any ideas for DC-centric iPhone apps? :)
