Capital Bikeshare announces new and expanded stations

DDOT has announced a list of 32 new Capital Bikeshare stations and 18 stations that will expand.

Update: The DC BAC created a quick map of the locations:

New stations appear in blue, expanded stations in red. Map by DC BAC. View larger map.

What do you think of these locations? Will they grow Capital Bikeshare ridership and/or alleviate crowding problems?

Also, Arlington will be adding 30 new stations, whose locations haven't yet been chosen, to the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor this fall and next spring.

Well, first off, 32 is a nice figure, considering it was looking like 20 or 25 earlier in the year.

I think the spots are generally an improvement, but a bit of a mixed bag. We'll certainly get more of an opportunity to learn more about the charlie-Veronica battle royale, and whether low ridership EOTR has been more about station availability or people in Wards 7 & 8 just not wanting to use it.

I'm pretty much in favor of the decision to pair the addition of stations with expansion (hopefully considerable expansion) of existing stations, and the Thomas Circle station seems to patch the biggest hole downtown, although the bottom of Penn Quarter, with all the courts, is still pretty lonely.

by Jacques on Jul 27, 2011 11:45 am • linkreport

W/the exception of the Good Hope/Minnesota ave station, the Ward 8 locations seem ok.

What sorta sucks about the Congress Heights location is that there's not a station to dock your bike if you're traveling east on Alabama Ave. In that direction, the closest station ends up being a 25min bike ride to Anacostia Library..or maybe Anacostia metro.

by HogWash on Jul 27, 2011 11:47 am • linkreport

Map someone please.

by David C on Jul 27, 2011 11:47 am • linkreport

While I would have liked to see one right by the Federal Center SW Metro, I guess the two new ones at 4th and E and Maryland and 6th are close enough.

My only other suggestion that seems not to have been taken was expanding the one at 5th and K, NW in Mt. Vernon Square. There's currently around 7 residential / commercial projects that have broken ground or are slated to and as more folks move in, that lonely station is going to continue to be overwhelmed. But maybe there will be another shot in the next year or so.

by Shipsa01 on Jul 27, 2011 11:50 am • linkreport

Oh, this is nice. Grabbing a bike will turn from an 8-minute walk to being right outside of my front door. This makes me very happy...

by andrew on Jul 27, 2011 11:51 am • linkreport

Selfishly, as someone who lives in Mt. Pleasant and works near Thomas Circle, these additions make me very happy.

by 80p on Jul 27, 2011 11:54 am • linkreport

Now it's almost worth it for someone like me who already has a bike to join. Can they do that Living Social half price deal thing again???

by aaa on Jul 27, 2011 11:54 am • linkreport

The Georgetown U station needs to be expanded. It is quite regularly empty or full, which is a pain in the ass because there is no other station close.

by Jasper on Jul 27, 2011 12:04 pm • linkreport

I think its good that it seems to be fairly even between stations in the core and on the fringe. Also glad to see more stations in adams-morgan.

by canaan on Jul 27, 2011 12:06 pm • linkreport

21st Street and I Street NW will be expanded -- which means we'll have 35 consistently empty docks instead of the current 27?

by OX4 on Jul 27, 2011 12:08 pm • linkreport

I can't argue with putting a new station practically right outside my door.

by JustMe on Jul 27, 2011 12:09 pm • linkreport

I'm kind of surprised 7th & Water SW is being expanded. That's my home station and it's rarely full or empty. It was also one of the underutilized stations on the map DDOT showed at the CaBi expansion meeting:

http://greatergreaterwashington.org/post/10741/ddot-posts-cabi-under--and-over-utilized-station-map/

I'd probably would have preferred 7th & C SW (L'Enfant Plaza) expanded as that station station seems at time to fill and empty rather quickly, though maybe the Maryland/6th and Independence station will help that.

by Steven Yates on Jul 27, 2011 12:11 pm • linkreport

I'm selfishly very glad for the station at 16th & Euclid.

Overall, glad to have 32 new stations and expansions to some others. These seem to fill in a lot of the patches.

by Gavin on Jul 27, 2011 12:11 pm • linkreport

Great news for north Capitol Hill/H Street!

by Hill Rat on Jul 27, 2011 12:15 pm • linkreport

The Georgia Ave/NH Ave station is often full or empty, and no other station is very close. I would rather see new stations at farther outposts, like farther up Georgia Ave.

What's the overall strategy? And is the system making money? Is DC getting revenue from this successful initiative?

by Lisa on Jul 27, 2011 12:19 pm • linkreport

Oops. I didn't see the GA @ Upshur addition. Excellent choice. Near the redone public library.

by Lisa on Jul 27, 2011 12:21 pm • linkreport

Steven, Some of the money comes from performance parking revenue in near SE/SW so that may be why that station is being expanded.

Lisa, is not making a profit yet, but it is making revenue. They've said they need advertising to break even.

by David C on Jul 27, 2011 12:25 pm • linkreport

Will the new station at 11th and H NE show up any faster than the 6th and H NE station, I wonder?

by Anon in Arl on Jul 27, 2011 12:28 pm • linkreport

Good list. Would have really appreciated a station east of Logan Circle, in the 11th Street area. But overall not bad.

by Adam L on Jul 27, 2011 12:31 pm • linkreport

I would also note that the expansion plans are very welcome. The stations at 14th and RI and 16th and Harvard, for example, have lots of surrounding space and could easily be expanded to double their current size, if not more.

by Adam L on Jul 27, 2011 12:33 pm • linkreport

One at Fort Totten would have been nice.

by Delista on Jul 27, 2011 12:36 pm • linkreport

I'd love to see one on Kennedy St east of Georgia Ave. I'm also surprised that there's not one at the Takoma metro. That one would get a serious amount of usage. Manor Park and Brightwood are missing too.

by Lucas on Jul 27, 2011 12:37 pm • linkreport

Great. 7 more stations EOTR where they will be underutilized.

by charlie on Jul 27, 2011 12:43 pm • linkreport

Looking good, but Friendship Heights and the Connecticut/Nebraska area are two locations in upper NW that should have received stations.

by Phil on Jul 27, 2011 12:43 pm • linkreport

Now what would be great if someone could merge the existing stations on the map in green or something to see how they relate to the system as a whole. Hopefully someone is bored enough to try it.

by canaan on Jul 27, 2011 12:50 pm • linkreport

@Steven, I use the 7th and Water station every so often as it's the logical backup and overflow station for my home station, 4th and M, which is also being expanded and probably should be. It may be that for some reason (preserving future development space?) they can't put as many new stands at 4th and M as they'd like, so some are going to 7th and Water instead.

by cminus on Jul 27, 2011 12:57 pm • linkreport

@Shipsa01 -- two thoughts on 5th/K.

1) It's possible that they're waiting until a few more of the proposed buildings open up to expand that station.
2) I wonder if any of the buildings under construction or in the planning phase are including a bikeshare station as part of their community benefits agreement, meaning the neighborhood will get another station, somewhat alleviating the need for more docks.

I also think that 5th and K benefits from being near both residential and commercial/retail properties, leading to a decent amount of natural rebalancing throughout the day, which might put it lower on the list for expansion.

by Jacques on Jul 27, 2011 1:13 pm • linkreport

I think you're probably right, Jacques. As for if any of the developers have proposed stations in their buildings, since I've been on the board of the neighborhood, none of the developers that have come forward have offered anything like that. But I'm glad to hear you mention that as I'm going to propose it from here on out.

by Shipsa01 on Jul 27, 2011 1:22 pm • linkreport

Starting from the DCBAC map, here's the map with the current non-expanding stations added

http://goo.gl/XQBpn

by Corey H on Jul 27, 2011 1:29 pm • linkreport

With the added stations in Rosslyn, why is there still no station on the Georgetown side of the Key Bridge? The Georgetown ANC recommended such a location in front of Hyde Elementary, and received no feedback one way or another from DDOT on that location.

by Ken Archer on Jul 27, 2011 1:31 pm • linkreport

Overall, a great list. Well done CaBi staff.

A little nit-picky, but I would have expected them to expand the station at Columbia and 18th (Adams Mill) given the large amount of space on that corner and the high volume of users at that station.

by D on Jul 27, 2011 1:37 pm • linkreport

Looking at the map Corey provided, it looks like the focus is infill as opposed to expanding to new territory. This is probably the right approach right now, but it does leave some areas unserved, particularly in the northern part of the district.

by Steven Yates on Jul 27, 2011 1:49 pm • linkreport

@Ken Archer:

I agree with you on being disappointed with the lack of Georgetown stations, but I think you're conflating two things. It's a bummer that there's no station at Hyde, which would be a nice central location for Georgetown's commercial district. There should probably be 2-3 more stations added on the Wisconsin corridor between Safeway and the canal, for ideal station density.

However, the lack of a station on the Georgetown side of the Key Bridge (another need) wouldn't really be addressed by Hyde, as the school is farther from the bridge than two of the existing Georgetown stations (37th&O and Wisconsin/Canal). It seems that the big blocks there are park service land along the canal, and narrow sidewalks in the non-NPS areas, and I'm not sure there's a good solution, unless 34th next to Cady's Alley or the Dean and Deluca alley are made available.

by Jacques on Jul 27, 2011 1:51 pm • linkreport

@D -- seems like they're intent on finding out whether adding two more Adams Morgan stations (3 if you count 16th and Euclid, which is a stretch) alleviates the pressure on the Adams Mill station, before making an expansion decision.

by Jacques on Jul 27, 2011 1:54 pm • linkreport

@Ken Archer

I agree. The most logical place to put such a station would be at the Francis Scott Key Memorial Park but it's NPS property. There may be room on the NW corner of 35th and M, but it may be difficult with the sidewalk and the curb cuts... maybe DDOT can look into it.

by Adam L on Jul 27, 2011 1:54 pm • linkreport

I own my own bike, paid the $50 introductory price, and have taken ~50 trips on Bikeshare so far.

Assuming that about half of those trips would have been done on Metro or Metrobus, it's paid for itself by now, and I still have a few months left before my membership rolls over.

by andrew on Jul 27, 2011 2:01 pm • linkreport

The new station in Glover Park is an excellent addition -- will get lots of use from residents, and from users of Stoddert Elementary, Stoddert Rec Center, and the playing fields. The lack of a station in the midst of the densest neighborhood in Ward 3 (and a neighborhood without metro) closes a big gap. Great decision by DDOT.

by Brian on Jul 27, 2011 2:44 pm • linkreport

I'm with Ken. It is unfortunate that DDOT did not put any additional stations on the west wide of Georgetown. That said, the Penn and M station is better than nothing.

Unlike charlie, I'm glad to see the EOTR stations. Perhaps with the increased density, we can see additional ridership.

by JS on Jul 27, 2011 3:16 pm • linkreport

Oh. Is 6th & H actually still happening? I was sort of just assuming that that one got axed in favor of one of the new 32.

by andrew on Jul 27, 2011 3:43 pm • linkreport

DDOT/Bikeshare seems to be giving a giant middle finger to Ward 5. What's up with that?

Sorry, Brookland, Ft. Totten, Catholic University, Providence Hospital, NE rec centers. No CaBi soup for you.

by Ward 1 Guy on Jul 27, 2011 3:47 pm • linkreport

The stations East of the river better get some more usage with this expansion. Or they should be pulled and brought in closer to other stations until there is the demand for them. It is a shame, but they get very little usage while there are many stations that are overwhelmed with usage.

by Anon on Jul 27, 2011 3:49 pm • linkreport

@JS

You are delusional. Since you like seeing stations not being used, perhaps we should put some CaBi stations on little islands in the river. I am sure they would get more usage with people passing by on boats than the ones EOTR.

by Anon on Jul 27, 2011 3:59 pm • linkreport

@Andrew -- it seems like the three stations already at Brookland/CUA and the one station in Edgewood will become more connected to the grid with the addition of new stations at 1st and Michigan, 1st and RI, and the Gallaudet station.

As for the rest of Ward 5, the list of new stations makes it seem like DDOT has set a northern boundary (at the beginning of the 3-digit street names) that it's not going to expand north of in this round. Similar to the western boundary of Glover Archbold Park).

by Jacques on Jul 27, 2011 4:07 pm • linkreport

Don't look now, but the system status feed shows the Fairfax Village station already up and running.

by cabi addict on Jul 27, 2011 4:16 pm • linkreport

The stations in downtown and near the mall are desperately needed. As a visitor, I wound up paying extra several times because the stations in the area are WAY too far apart and then having to walk a long way afterwards, making bikeshare stressful, costly, and inconvenient. This plan would do wonders to flesh out the system in much of the inner NW as well, where big gaps exist at present.

One of the problems of locating stations based on this type of map is that you often leave out very obvious things, such as the Megabus pick-up, drop-off location at N Capital and K NW. There are always taxis hustling for fares there, and there isn't a metro very close by. There are big lineups and the area is quite busy despite its lack of residential or office density. A bikeshare station in the areas would be quite well used, and there is a big void of stations in that area in general.

by Jacob on Jul 27, 2011 4:21 pm • linkreport

@andrew Oh. Is 6th & H actually still happening? I was sort of just assuming that that one got axed in favor of one of the new 32.

According to the DDOT press release:

Additionally, DDOT will install the already planned Capital Bikeshare stations at 6th and H Street, NE and Foggy Bottom Metro.

We'll see...

by Anon in Arl on Jul 27, 2011 4:25 pm • linkreport

@jacob, I'd love to see a station at the Megabus stop, and I agree that it would be a significant time and money saver. I wonder if DC can negotiate with Megabus to have them sponsor a station, in lieu of the proposed curbside inter-city bus fee.

by Jacques on Jul 27, 2011 4:29 pm • linkreport

I'm excited about the expansion and even more excited that the Fairfax Village station was installed this morning.

by Veronica O. Davis (Ms V) on Jul 27, 2011 4:41 pm • linkreport

The station at 21st & I St NW doesn't really need to be expanded. What actually needs to happen is DDOT needs to install the originally planned Foggy Bottom Metro station that they've been completely uncommunicative about and have said time and time again is coming "next week."

by Erik W on Jul 27, 2011 4:43 pm • linkreport

@Erik W

As far as I remember, the station at Foggy Bottom is being held up due to construction across the street where it is supposed to be located.

by Adam L on Jul 27, 2011 5:08 pm • linkreport

that Good Hope Rd. and MN Ave. SE one is going to rock. I often have to go to that block for work and will often ride to/from the Anacostia metro or across the Frederick Douglass bridge to my home in SW. The library site isn't far away, but it's the wrong direction from where I'm going and there a lot of hills and one-ways in the area.

I'm also glad for the expansion at 4th & M SW (that station is full on several evenings and I had one time that the 7th & Water was too and I had to park by the ballpark) and a new one at 4th & E!

unrelated: the captcha I'm getting has one word upside down. Not sure how I'm supposed to type that! (if you see this post I guess I figured it out).

by sb on Jul 27, 2011 5:34 pm • linkreport

14th & R which is always full or empty not being expanded and no new stations going close-by.

Expansion should be where it's needed the most from current over-use. Dupont/Logan will remain hard to use.

by Tom Coumaris on Jul 27, 2011 9:01 pm • linkreport

@Tom Coumaris

I'd imagine 14th and R was not expanded because it is at a temporary location due to pending construction across the street at the Verizon building (where the station was and where it's 'supposed' to be).

by Alex B. on Jul 27, 2011 9:34 pm • linkreport

Alex B.- I assumed 14th and R was a permenent move as the new condos didn't want it in front and the WW Clinic has no problems. I was at least hoping for more docks.

by Tom Coumaris on Jul 28, 2011 2:01 am • linkreport

It's nice that we are getting additional CaBi stations, but we still need to do more to make it safe to bike to the 'other side'. We really need to figure out a way to get bikers and pedestians across the E.Capital St. bridge. It goes right into Capital Hill. Why can't this be done????

by EastRiverHeights on Jul 28, 2011 7:56 am • linkreport

Interesting comments from people who don't live in neighborhoods dictating what "better" happen. The problem isn't people not wanting to use bikes EOR, it's there's no really safe place. I agree that at this point adding more bikes is putting the proverbial cart before the horse, but that's not justification for not providing the cart at all. First push the bike lanes. There are plenty of us that want them. We need a safe place to ride.

On the whole, looks like a good expansion. On the Megabus parking spot idea - I'm not sure how sustainable that would be, because I'm not clear if Megabus will be there for the long-haul. Building close to permanenet structures is a good idea.

Kindof random, but I'd love to see expansion to the underutilized National Arboretum. It would be nice to be able to get out there for a ride and might even increase use of one of DC's hidden gems.

by Gonzo on Jul 28, 2011 1:42 pm • linkreport

I agree with Lucas. Still no bikeshare in Brightwood or 16th Street Heights? If Capital Bikeshare wants to be so inclusive of east of the river, why is it blanket ignoring other neighborhoods?

We need a station at Ft Totten Metro. And I propose one at 14th&Kennedy/Colorado--do something for the Brightwood Park and 16th St Heights residents who still can't access the system.

by BB on Jul 28, 2011 2:15 pm • linkreport

@Gonzo I couldn't agree more. We all want to see more CaBi access at federally controlled green spaces. The National Arboretum is high on the list. If only DDOT were allowed to put stations there... (see this post and comments on National Park Service)

Bikesharing's amazing. We've taken the cheapest, greenest, most personalized, most flexible, most hassle-free form of transportation and made it expensive, polluting (with vans moving bikes as much as people), stressful (gotta find a locker to get rid of the damn thing), and dorky.

by Shipsa01 on Jul 28, 2011 8:21 pm • linkreport

@Gonzo @Ward1Guy -- the Arboretum is actually run by USDA, not by NPS, so given the success working with GSA and OPM, it seems like there's a decent chance that they'd be amenable (unlike NPS).

On the other hand, given that the station would be almost purely a recreational destination, I'm not sure it would rise up the priority list anytime soon, unless a donor came forward to underwrite the station.

by Jacques on Jul 29, 2011 8:49 am • linkreport

I was really pulling for Church & 16th instead of a south of the circle station, but overall it looked like they did a good job of balancing added capacity and serving new areas. In general for the future I'm hoping for more infill stations to make the service more convenient, allowing for shorter rides and keeping those bikes in circulation! I can't imagine anyone riding from south of the circle to north of the circle.

by Boots on Aug 8, 2011 7:24 am • linkreport

Wait, I get it, it's expanding. I still suggest a station by the CVS on Wisconsin, the station being on 0Street, the sidewalk is wide there and already has a bike rack. That or they can just take up a space or two of parking, just like they have on Potomac street across from Booeymonger.
