You could do benches with single seating spaces so no one could lay down and use them as a bed, this all sounds like a great idea.

Jenny - Washington Globe is the name of the style of lamp post you see in historic areas of DC. Here's a photo:

this is a little off-topic, but i need to tell some sympathetic souls. I was stopped by a cop while riding my bike to work this morning, and given a $25 ticket. how weird is that?

i blogged about it here. sympathetic comments appreciated.

Being a complete klutz who can trip over a painted line, I really dislike brick sidewalks, there are usually random bricks that stick up, creating a tripping hazard.

I'm glad to see tree-friendly paving systems were discussed for CapHill. (didn't see that prior to my first comment) And yes, it's silly this plan doesn't include more tree-friendly paving technology.

Bianchi: The permeability of the pavers(how much rainwater goes through them instead of down the drain) is another thing that affects tree growth & viability.

David - thinking about the squaring & turn radius & things...

What would be your opinion on using a small designalized roundabout in conjunction with a 'scramble crossing' for buses, bikes, and pedestrians who press a button? Seems like the decreased traffic throughput of the latter could be made up for by the former, while eliminating the dangers of vehicles turning into crosswalks & bike lanes.

The choice of sidewalk pavers is very important if we want trees. Here is an article about rubberized pavers that stretch instead of break when tree roots grow, thus saving the city money in replacement and helping to protect the health and longevity of the tree. There are several solutions to traditional concrete and brick with respect to accommodating growing trees. This rubberized paver is just one.
