So if the navy was test firing cannons by shooting them across the water, does this mean that the bottom of the river is covered in cannonballs?

Please proofread... Towards the end: tools not tolls And towards the beginning: "In the early 1850s the Navy curtailed ship building at the Washington Navy Yard was curtailed, and many skilled workers were unemployed." Curtailed is twice, makes the sentence incorrect.

The Navy Yard wasn't the huge polluter -- that was the Washington Gas Works, located just East of the Navy Yard and 11th St Bridge.

These days, most of that pollution is actually gone from the river itself (but lingers in the soil on the shores). The big polluter is now rural/suburban runoff from Prince George's County, and other points to the north.

Great story! How cities happen is so fascinating.

Also, the history of polluting the Anacostia River goes back hundreds of years. The Navy Yard was a major industrial facility for the best part of a century.

As an aside, a print of the Brady photo hangs in my office.
