In the fascinating review of his book on CSPAN, Mr. Morley, in response to an audience question, found several similarities between the politics of the 1830's and of today, especially with regard to the intense polarization of the country around the issue of slavery. I think it would be apt to mention another: the eerie similarity between the Jacksonians of that era and the Tea Partiers of today.

Well, there was the "high tech lynching" of poor Clarence Thomas before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The original was even better than the priceless re-enactment on Saturday Night Live. Made me swear off Coca-Cola for more than a year.

Nice review, John.

Question: I understand there was never a lynching within the city limits of Washington. Is this true? (The Pearl Affair and Snow Riot taken into consideration...)

Thanks.

Looking forward to this one.

I can’t say I have read everything ever written about Key, but everything I have read is basically good. This book will be his first big test.

Paradoxically, the two authors who have done full-length biographies, Delaplaine and Weybright, make no mention of this part of Key’s life.

This book looks great and should spark discussions. Should we criticize Key for doing his part to convict, or did he go too far?
