On cyclist-driver harmony, candidates divide neatly in half

For last week's question on Let's Choose DC (a partnership of Greater Greater Washington, DCist, and PoPville), we asked the at-large DC Council candidates how to promote harmony between cyclists and drivers on the road. Your votes on their responses divide them neatly into two groups.

The top 3 candidates retain the same 1-2-3 ranking as in questions 3 (education) and 4 (growth): Matt Frumin and Elissa Silverman a close 1 and 2, and John Settles a clear but still competitive 3rd. All three had over 60% of voters view their responses either "very persuasive" or "persuasive."

On the other end of the spectrum, the other 3 candidates who respondedAnita Bonds, Perry Redd, and Michael Browngot less than 25% persuasive/very persuasive. Michael Brown did particularly poorly, with 29% of voters rating his response "very unpersuasive" and another 28% rating it "unpersuasive."

Patrick Mara and Paul Zukerberg did not respond to this question.

And don't forget to vote on this week's question, on ethics! For that one, we have responses from all 7 candidates except Ms. Bonds. You have until Monday to vote, but why not do it today when perhaps you have a less hectic schedule?

My biggest fear over this upcoming election is that many people will vote for Anita Bonds, mistakenly believing that she is Barry Bonds's mother, when she is in fact but a distant cousin.

My biggest fear is that the Silverman/Frumin voters will split allowing any of the others to win. Is there any way of getting everyone behind one or the other? I doubt it, but, this will be another Shapiro/Biddle => Orange.

But we call her "Barry Bonds" because she's just so close to you-know-who.

My biggest fear is that Silverman will win which might not bode well for the city.

Why, HogWash?

@GH, Her approach to politicking seems to be a bit too adversarial (me against them) and just might contribute to the city's divide in ways similar to a Mayor Tommy Wells. Just not my cup of tea. Besides, her EOTR presence (like Wells) leaves a lot to be desired.

HogWash: OK, you're entitled to your opinion. I don't share it, but c'est la vie.

A question, though. Why do you insist on abbreviating my name every time you address me? It's the internet - there's unlimited space.

I didn't think you would. But thanks!

Why do I abbreviate it? Because it's easier. Much like I do for DAl, AWITC, FC et. al.

HogWash: I suppose. I hope you'll come to the GGW anniversary party in a couple weeks. It would be nice to meet one of our most prolific commenters.

So she's divisive in ways that you can't express--just like Tommy Wells, who is also divisive for similarly inexpressible reasons. Plus, she is lacking in some ineffable "EOTR presence" sense.

Are you absolutely sure this is not just agonizingly convoluted code for "she's too white"?

Roger Too White was a character in a Tom Wolfe novel.

It's my b-day week so I'm seriously considering it!!!!!

Settles is out because of petition challenges. Does this mean that he'll be dropped from Let's Choose DC? Too bad, I thought he gave pretty good answers to Let's Choose DC.

by Ward 1 Guy on Feb 26, 2013 8:42 am • linkreport

So with the elimination of Settles and Silverman (because she is responsible for Settles being out), I guess that leaves Frumin as the last viable candidate.
