Greater Greater Washington

How well do you know Metro? It's whichWMATA week 16

It's time for the sixteenth installment of our weekly "whichWMATA" series! Below are photos of 5 stations in the Washington Metro system. Can you identify each from its picture?

Don't be discouraged if you find it a little hard at first. Reflect on your answers, and I'm sure you'll hit a home run.

We'll hide the comments so the early birds don't spoil the fun for the rest of you.

The answers will appear on Wednesday. Good luck!

Spring Hill

by Scott Weiss on Jul 28, 2014 1:43 pm • linkreport

Nice touch given this week's events. I haven't ridden the Silver Line yet, but it shouldn't be hard to figure these out:

(1) Wiehle-Reston East
(2) Tysons Corner
(3) Spring Hill
(4) Greensboro
(5) McLean

I paused a bit as to (3) and (4), but I'm pretty sure the traffic light is the giveaway since Greensboro is closer to surface level as it comes out of the tunnel.

Easy for those of us who spend every day in Tysons even though I haven't been on the silver line yet.

Wiehle, Tysons Corner, Spring Hill, Greensboro, McLean

by Aaron on Jul 28, 2014 2:15 pm • linkreport

These are all too easy. And I suppose predictable. All are from the new Silver line stations. One of each of them.

#1: Wiehle. The roof is the giveaway here, and the toll road to either side nails it down.

#2: Tysons Corner station. I suppose this could have been a tough one. The shape of the roof again suggests one of the new stations, clearly not Wiehle since the toll road isn't present, and not Greensboro either since Rt 7 isn't there. But it sure looks like the pedestrian bridge over Rt 123 leading towards the mall.

#3: Spring Hill. Ascent at Tysons building in the background is the give-away here.

#4: Greensboro. Mezzanine is above platform - that's the give-away here.

#5: McLean. Ballfield is the give-away here.

Since I know #1 is Wiehle ('sup Toll Road), I'm going to just guess that they're all Silver Line stations...which is fun, cuz I haven't been out there yet!

Many thanks for the 41-picture set earlier, which made this do-able!

1) Wiehle/Reston East - the Dulles Toll Road is clearly visible on either side
2) Tysons Corner - gambrel roof with a road underneath, similar to Silver Spring
3) Spring Hill - starburst roof & process of elimination
4) Greensboro - high walls to block car noise from Route 7
5) McLean - ballfield visible

1. Wiehle – Reston East - The location in the median of the Dulles Toll Rd makes this one very easy

2. Tysons Corner - Station is elevated and has bulky roof design

3. Spring Hill - Peaked roof and Ascent apartment building gave it away

4. Greensboro - Ground level location and traffic lights means it could only be this station

5. McLean - View of Tysons across the Beltway and baseball field gave it away

This was fun!

1) Wiehle-Reston East - only one in the median of the toll road
2) Tysons Corner
3) Spring Hill - I recognize that huge apartment building
4) Greensboro - the station is partially submerged with that wall separating the track bed from the roadway
5) Mclean - the baseball field
