Image one is the BART, I think one of the downtown Oakland stations, either 12 st or 19th st.

1. BART 16th and Mission (I used this station less than 2 months ago)

2. Chicago

3. Dallas-DART light rail

4. MUNI-Civic Center?

5. Denver RTA Light rail

I recognized #2 immediately as Montreal because of the rolling stock, but I had to go online to identify the station as Berri-UQAM. No clue about the others, guess I need to get around more!

2.
3. DART: Victory

1. BART. Destination signage suggests it's a transfer station in the East Bay before you reach SF - based off the BART station map I'd guess 19th St/Oakland.
2. STM (Montreal). I only remember the "door markings" at a few stations, one of which is Berri-UQAM, so I'll guess that.
3. DART. It's near DFW but doesn't seem to be at the airport - maybe the Belt Line stop?
4. San Diego Trolley. No idea what station.
5. Salt Lake City? Image talks about "free fare zone" which suggests maybe Salt Lake or Pittsburgh; context feels a bit more Salt Lake to me, so that's the guess.

Yay, finally a whichWMATA that I can play well, having never actually lived in the greater Washington area!

1) Bay Area BART, 12th Street/Oakland City Center
2) Montreal Metro, Berri/UQAM
3) Dallas DART, Victory (OK, I cheated--I found the station name in the picture, although the proximity of the Reunion Tower was a hint)
4) San Diego Trolley, SDSU Transit Center (I almost said 12th & Imperial, which is located under a building, but that station is more open than this one).
5) Charlotte LYNX, 3rd Street/Convention Center. This was by far the toughest photo for me, being the only system I haven't explored--my first instinct was actually Buffalo.

by Austin on Aug 18, 2014 2:19 pm • linkreport

When I first saw the introduction to this post, I thought there was no way I'd guess any of them if they were from all over the world. Since they're all from North America, though, I think I can make a reasonable effort:

1) Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) - 12th Street/Oakland City Center station
2) Montreal Metro – Berri-UQAM station
3) Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) – Victory station
4) San Diego trolley – SDSU Transit Center station
5) Charlotte Lynx – 3rd Street station

1. BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). The station is 12th Street Oakland City Center. Only two stations in the system have multilevel platforms. The red brick is the identifier.
2. Paris Metro???
3. DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit)
4. San Diego Trolley. The station is SDSU Transit Center. It is the only underground station in the entire system.
5. Portland Max???

#1: San Francisco, BART. Yellow line, I believe the 19th St station.

#2: Montreal. Berri UQAM station (artwork is quite distinctive).

#3 Dallas. Victory station. Reunion tower in background. Sign saying "Victory" is kind of visible in picture.

#4 San Diego, SDSU station. Only one in the system that is underground.

#5 Charlotte. Convention center station. Lights and tunnel are distinctive.

This was a great idea.

1. BART - The unique wide white railcars are immediately identifiable

2. Montreal Metro - The narrow, rubber-tyred railcars in this system are even more unique. By coincidence I happened to use this system during a recent trip in July. It's actually carries more passengers daily than Metro

3. DART - Again, the unique LRT vehicles are the giveaway

4. San Diego Trolley - Really a light rail system (although referred to as a "trolley"). I happened to ride this system for the first time on a West Coast trip last fall.

5. Lynx (Charlotte) - This one was tricky. The blurred out CATS logo, "newness" of the station, and buildings in the background are decent clues though

Interestingly enough this was actually easier than whichWMATA. I was able to identify the first 4 immediately at first glance.

2. Montreal Metro - You can see a piece of the system map in the train.

3. Dallas DART

4. San Diego - Tough one!

5. Charlotte LYNX. A quick search for "city ordinance 15-271" was the give away.

1 is BART at 12th Street/Oakland City Center Station.
2 is the Montreal Metro at Berri-UQAM Station.
3 is DART Rail in Dallas, at Cedars Station.
4 is the San Diego Trolley at SDSU Station.
5 is the Charlotte LYNX at 3rd Street/Convention Center Station.
Seriously, the DC Metro pictures are much more challenging.

by Paul on Aug 19, 2014 4:07 am • linkreport

Finally, a challenge I can do (I'm a west coast guy who's visited DC only thrice).

1- San Francisco BART. This was the first subway system I ever rode, and it holds a special place in my heart. The station is one of the Oakland transfer stations, I think 19th st but possibly 12th st.

2- This one I don't recognize, which is in itself enough to tell me that it must (probably) be outside the US. My *wild guess* is Mexico City, for no real reason.

3- Dallas DART. Utterly unique looking trains.

4- San Diego MTS.

5- Charlote LYNX. This one had me stumped for a while. It's obviously a modern LRT system, which narrows it down to like a dozen in the US alone. My guess, again for no real reason, was LYNX, and I eventually found a place in the photo with the LYNX logo, blurry but recognizable. Man will I feel like an idiot if this turns out to be wrong.

Well. The first one is BART. Its not perfect, but its a lot cleaner, a lot brighter and the BART operators and station managers have a lot more professionalism and courtesy. Maybe its just the West Coast and the weather, but there is far less "culture of entitlement" and "culture of indifference" which to me is endemic of Metro (and the Washington D.C. culture in general)
