Red Line suspended part of Thursday and most of Saturday
Tomorrow (Thursday) and Saturday, Metro will suspend Red Line service between Fort Totten and Silver Spring, splitting the red line into two segments and closing the Takoma station. The NTSB needs to close the line as part of its crash investigation.
Service will be interrupted on Thursday from 10am to 3pm, and on Saturday from 7am to 7pm.
While Metro will provide shuttle bus service between the Silver Spring, Takoma and Fort Totten stations, you may find it easier to use one of the maps on the "12-minute" bus map posted earlier. For example, the 70s routes travel between Silver Spring and Gallery Place along 7th Street and Georgia Avenue.

At the Congressional hearing earlier this week, the NTSB and WMATA mentioned that they're still trying to determine why this track circuit *continues* to fail.
Five days before the crash, a Wee-Z bond was replaced in the track circuit. Shortly thereafter, the circuit intermittently failed to detect trains.
The crash occurred, and testing of the circuit began.
The Wee-Z bond replaced just before the crash failed to detect trains during tests.
It was replaced by a brand new Wee-Z bond. It also failed to detect trains.
They replaced that one with the Wee-Z bond in use prior to five days before the crash (which had been working fine) and it failed to detect trains.
So until they figure out why this continues to happen, we're going to have continuing delays on the Red Line.

The trains stopping at the end/head/front of the platform is a different issue unrelated to the crash.
After the crash, WMATA ordered all trains to operate in manual. In the past, 8-car trains operating in manual had stopped at the 6-car point and opened their doors with the last car still off the platform. As a result, any time all trains are operating in manual, they stop at the head of the platform.
This practice ensures that no doors open off the platform.
Once automatic train operation resumes, we can go back to mid-train/mid-platform matching (as opposed to head-end stopping). That won't happen until the ATC system is determined to be safe (and redundant). That probably is at least a year off.
