Events: What should DC look like in the future?

It’s great to learn online, but if we want to make our region better, we have to get involved in the community too—that’s why we put together a weekly list of events for you to consider attending! If you’re a DC resident, check out a meeting about the update to the Comprehensive Plan, which will shape the District’s future.

The Comp Plan, which is the guidebook for where and how to grow, is due for an update. If you weigh in, you can help make it the best it can be, but there are only three chances left.

This week, there are meetings on Tuesday, November 1 at 2425 N Street NW and Thursday, November 3 at 801 7th Street SW. Both start at 6 pm, as does the final one, which is on Monday, November 14 at 1001 Monroe Street NE.

If you can’t make any of these meetings, you can still tell the Office of Planning what you think here. You can also sign up to get further updates from GGWash about ways to make a difference in the Comp Plan process.

Monday, October 31: Jonathan Rose, founder of a company that focuses on environmental, social, and economic solutions to urban issues, will speak about his new book, The Well-Tempered City, a “passionate survey of the ongoing evolution of the metropolis,” on Monday, October 31, at Politics and Prose (5015 Connecticut Avenue NW). It’s at 7 pm, and seating is first-come-first-served.

Tuesday, November 1: Hear from a roundtable panel about the National Park Service (NPS) and urban parks in DC as part of a series hosted by DC Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton. Learn how residents can work with NPS and what Norton can do to facilitate a good relationship. The event is at 6:30 pm at the African America Civil War Museum (1925 Vermont Avenue NW).

Wednesday, November 2: Are you looking to buy a home in DC? Attend this session on Thursday at 815 Florida Avenue NW at 6pm to learn about DC’s Open Doors mortgage process from experts in the field.

Thursday, November 3: Find out how bike and tech fit together at the sixth Capital Bikeshare Hack Night this Thursday at 2221 South Clark Street in Arlington.

As soon as you’re able!: There’s no need to leave the house for this one. The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, which controls $400 million per yearin funds for building new transportation projects, wants to know what you think our region’s transportation priorities should be. Should we have more transit access and more frequent service? More Park and Rides or highway connections? Take the NVTA’s survey to weigh in.
