Breakfast non-links: Have a great weekend

There are no breakfast links today. I'm in the Pacific Northwest and then Vancouver until Tuesday. Have a great long weekend! The links will return on Wednesday. Meanwhile, feel free to post about and discuss any exciting news in the comments.

Regular posting will continue today and Tuesday between posts I've preloaded and posts from the terrific group of contributors.

David Alpert is the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Greater Greater Washington and Greater Greater Education. He worked as a Product Manager for Google for six years and has lived in the Boston, San Francisco, and New York metro areas in addition to Washington, DC. He loves the area which is, in many ways, greater than those others, and wants to see it become even greater.

Have fun David. I'll be visiting Vancouver for the first time during the middle of this month. From what I hear Stanley Park (bike along the seawall) and the Granville Island Market are must do activities.

Metro's Board will be looking at some preliminary numbers next week, and the staff report is online:

Staff left off the big number, but here's how it goes.

Metro's looking at about a $170M deficit next year if everything gets baseline extended.

If fares go up with inflation (about 4% since the last increase), that's about $40M.

They're planning on dipping into reserves for about $30M, leaving about $110M in increases for the jurisdictions.

Recall that the last round of arguments over service cuts involved about $29M in cuts. So we get to do this all over again in May/June, plus fight over dipping into reserves, plus a fight over a fare increase.

How is the Pacific Northwest different from Vancouver?

In any case, I'm jealous.

Wish: I wish you would update the links at the right, particularly the blog links. For instance, does Marc Fisher still have a blog?

by Jazzy on Sep 9, 2009 7:57 am • linkreport

I try to keep the links updated as much as possible. I've taken Raw Fisher off the links. I also added some more over the last few weeks, like Barry Farm (Re)Mixed and the Montgomery Countryside Alliance.

When you do your next round of link updating, you should add JDLand to the Washington section. Jaqueline Dupree won a cash award for the quality of her blog, which documents the changes in the "Capitol Riverfront" (nats ballpark) area.

Fantastic blog and blogger, there.

It's there, just under the title "Ballpark and Beyond," which is the other title of that site. I changed it to "JDLand (Ballpark/Near Southeast)."
