The new design has now been active for a week. Many of you sent in bug reports, which were very helpful. Here are a few of the items that are now fixed:

  • Comment “thank you” page. Before the redesign, several of you suggested that the page after you post a comment should show the blog post and comments, instead of just showing a thank you message and requiring an additional click to get back. In the new design, I did that, but the URL of that page was http://greatergreaterwashington.org/comment.cgi, the comment processing script, which makes it impossible to then go and tweet the article, bookmark it, or just reload. I’ve now fixed this so that it actually redirects you back to the comment page itself with a little temporary cookie so the system knows to show the confirmation message.
  • Unsubscribe page. I missed moving over the page that lets you unsubscribe if you’ve signed up to get emails when people comment on a post you’ve commented on. That is now reinstated.
  • Miscellaneous broken links. Some links were broken, and some old posts weren’t showing images in a few cases. Most of these are fixed, but there might still be a few around.

If you encounter any more problems, broken links or inconveniences, please post them in the comments or send an email.

Some people reported that the “save my name and email” feature isn’t working, but some had it spontaneously start working again, it seems to work for others, and I haven’t been able to replicate Jasper’s problem so far. Please speak up if that’s happening to you as well.

Finally, a few people have been getting a suboptimal look with the typography, though I think it is good for almost everyone. Opera seems to handle the line spacing a little different than IE, Firefox, Chrome and Safari. Also, Segoe UI looks really nice (at least I think so), but if you are still using Windows XP and don’t have “ClearType font smoothing” active, then Segoe looks bad. That’s pretty rare, because you’d have to have an old machine but a new copy of MS Office. Anyway, if that’s happening for you, you can fix font smoothing like this.

If you’re encountering these problems or others, I’d love to hear about it. You never want even a small number of current users to have a worse experience, though it’s often unavoidable for at least a few people when making a change which improves the site’s appearance for many more.
