A couple of great events are coming up over the next few weeks, including the WalkingTownDC walking and biking tours and a number of neighborhood festivals tomorrow.

GGW happy hour: Join GGW on Thursday October 7 at the Laughing Man for drinks and conversation. We’ll be starting at 6 pm and we’ll stick around for a couple hours. Laughing Man is at 1306 G Street NW, near the 13th Street entrance to the Metro Center station.

Panel with David and Gabe Klein: EMBARQ has created a video documentary of New York City’s recent advances in transportation. They’re showing it on Thursday, September 30 followed by a panel including GGW’s David Alpert, DDOT’s Gabe Klein, and Dani Simons from NYC DOT. That’s 5-6:30 pm at 10 G Street NE, suite 800.

Bike tour of Greenbelt: On Saturday, October 2nd, I’ll be leading a bike tour of Greenbelt. The town is a planned community built as a part of the New Deal. It’s the best preserved of the 3 Green Towns built during the Depression.

The tour will run from 1-5 pm and will begin and end at the Greenbelt Metro station. It includes a tour of the Greenbelt Museum and will cost $5. It’s a 4-mile tour, suitable even for those who don’t bike much. If you’re interested in attending or have questions, please RSVP to me at mcjohnson@ggwash.org.

Tours and festivals this weekend: This weekend is WalkingTown (and BikingTown) DC, with tours of all neighborhoods including a Tommy Wells bike tour of Ward 6 (Sunday), a Richard Layman tour of Florida Market (Saturday), and a Kent Boese tour of Park View (Sunday) plus much more.

There are also a large number of neighborhood festivals tomorrow (September 25), including the Barracks Row Fall Festival near Eastern Market Metro, the South Silver Spring Block Party, centered around Acorn Park, on Kennett Street just off East-West Highway; the 17th Street Festival on 17th Street in Dupont celebrating new streetscape improvements, and Clarendon Day over in Arlington. There’s also the National Book Festival on the Mall.

If WalkingTown DC whets your appetite for learning about neighborhoods, the Coalition for Smarter Growth is taking a closer look at three. There’s a forum on revitalizing Fairfax’s Route 1 with the former mayor of Indianapolis on Wednesday, September 29, and walking tours of White Flint and the West End on October 2nd and 23rd, both Saturdays. For a super day of Maryland touring, tou can even walk White Flint on October 2nd and then bike or take transit over to Greenbelt for the bike tour.
