Obama endorses transit and bike lanes

At a speech in Portland, Oregon, Senator Barack Obama praised Portland's progressive approach to transportation as a model for the nation:

Yes we can.
If we are going to solve our energy problems we’ve got to think long term. It's time for us to be serious about investing in alternative energy. It's time for us to get serious about raising fuel efficiency standards on cars. It's time that the entire country learn from what's happening right here in Portland with mass transit and bicycle lanes and funding alternative means of transportation. That’s the kind of solution that we need for America.

One thing I saw in downtown Portland was charging stations for EVs. Given the relatively short ranges of current generation EVs, one of the things you need to get people to start using them is easy recharging. At one of the recharging stations I saw a Zapcar (Xebra) parked recharging. I've never seen one of them in Washington.

I'm waiting to hear him or any candidate talk about bicycles in Pittsburgh, St. Louis or Memphis. Promising bike lanes in Portland is like condemning NAFTA in Detroit. Comes off as pandering to me.
