Greater Greater Washington. The Washington, DC area is great. But it could be greater.

Alexandria still into Potomac Yards station

The Post reports continuing movement by the City of Alexandria toward putting an infill station on the Yellow and Blue Lines at Potomac Yards. The WMATA 2030 map I made for WMATA contains this potential infill station as well.

He worked as a Product Manager for Google for six years and has lived in the Boston, San Francisco, and New York metro areas in addition to Washington, DC. He loves the area which is, in many ways, greater than those others, and wants to see it become even greater.

In 1995, I had to cover Alexandria politics as part of a journalism class at American University. Back then, the infill station was a goal. Now 13 years later, they're still talking?

Kevin, There has to date been little reason for an infill station at that spot. Development plans are only now turning into real construction and creating a need for it. Chicken-egg thing...

It is good to see that the city of Alexandria is encouraging greater density closer to the proposed Potomac Yards station (http://alexandriava.gov/uploadedFiles/planning/info/potomacyard/WorksessionPresentation5608.pdf). If you look at the report from the Alexandria Planning Commission, however, (published on May 6) you can see that the shopping center immediately next to the proposed Metro station and Landbay G (the plot of land proposed for a density transfer)is inimical to transit-oriented development. Approximately half of the parking lot for the shopping center is located within a 1/2 mile radius of the proposed Metro station. Hopefully, the planners for the city of Alexandria will either relax parking requirements at the Potomac Yards or will pursue a shared-parking arrangement for new residents to be able to use the parking in this shopping center.
