Bicycling

Weekend videos: Police and bikes

The NYPD have had a few high-profile clashes with cyclists in recent years.

One of the issues cyclists have been having with the police is in regard to riding in the bike lane. Some officers are ticketing cyclists for not riding in the bike lanesomething that is not illegal in New York City.

As this video shows, there are plenty of valid reasons for cyclists to leave the bike lane from time to time.

Hopefully, the NYPD can better educate its officers on rules about cycling. They would be wise to follow in the footsteps of the San Francisco Police Department, which produced this video to educate officers about the rights and responsibilities of cyclists.

I laughed pretty hard at the first obstacle. But how bad of a cop can you be to give someone a ticket for something that isn't illegal? If you're unsure about the legality of something (especially if no one is being actively harmed) then shouldn't you let that one slide and clarify it back at the station? On the ticket shouldn't there be something to at least reference what law one specifically broke so that the recipient could at least look it up themself?

Themself? Holy Mother of God. That's fingernails on a blackboard. You can't turn the "self" singular and leave "them" plural. Try "...so that the recipients could at least look it up themselves". I hardly ever comment on the grammer of comments, but jeez...

In Boston, I once got a parking ticket with no violation noted on it.

I was told that I had to just wait until something came into "the system", and wasn't allowed a chance to fight it.

Always check what law you're being cited under then look it up online. If it's not the correct law (a frequent typo) or if it's what you did is simply not a violation: you'll have a very easy case.

@ksu499 Normally I don't bother with grammar nazis but correcting people on minor nonsense like this shows such ignorance of what language is and how it works. I'll clue you in, it changes over time and as long as people know what you are trying to say then you are doing it correctly. It's nice to have a base of standards that we all work off of to keep language from diverging to much but you don't need to go around "correcting" people everytime they don't keep exactly to that standard. Again, it just makes you look like an idiot who has no idea why we even have language or grammar to begin with. It certainly wasn't so you could run around annoying people as you try to impress them with what you learned in third grade english class.

grammer? seriously? immediately after criticizing someone's language skills.

Back to the point, the bicyclist running into obstacles video was an impressive and ballsy way to make a point. Hope NYPD got the message and it's backed up from higher up like they Mayor's office.

I especially liked hitting the double-parked police vehicle as the finale.

And what does this have to do with Washington, DC?

by asuka on Jun 12, 2011 3:23 pm • linkreport

That cyclist is a danger to one and all ... to have not seen those obstacles. He should be ticketed for not looking where he is going.

;)

I hope he was charged for vandalizing city property.

I'll tell you what this has to do with D.C.

On two separate occasions, I have been yelled at by cyclists as I've opened my driver side door and they have whizzed past - barely missing me and my car door in the process.

Here's the rub. This was on Pennsylvania Avenue where there is a huge bike lane in the center of the street. The city of DC spent major dollars reconfiguring the avenue and these fools continue to ride in the car lanes.

My feeling is that - absent major obstacles - cyclists should make their best effort to stay in the bike lanes at all times. That's why the lanes are there.
